Confirm the product and the stage

Read the error heading, product name and complete message, not just the final number. Keep a screenshot with the application name and timestamp visible.

What failed What to preserve
An installer did not complete Installer name, exact message, whether a restart was requested
A launcher reports a service or module problem Product name, full error and the stage before the game opened
The game reaches its menu but rejects a join The game’s message and selected server; see access checks
The process simply closes Start with crash diagnosis

These branches organize evidence. They do not assign an unverified meaning to a numbered code.

Safe first checks

  1. Finish any Windows or game-installer restart already requested. Do not repeatedly start a second installation while one is still running.
  2. In Steam, confirm you are working on WARDOGS, not a retained Playtest or another game’s anti-cheat files.
  3. Complete pending downloads. Open Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files and wait for the result.
  4. Relaunch normally once. Record whether the same message returns or the failure moves to another stage.
  5. Check the official announcements for instructions that explicitly apply to your current error and build.

Verification checks local files. It is not proof that a driver loaded, an installation succeeded, or online access is available.

For WD-L020 on Windows 11, the Update 0.1.2 notes report a fix for crashes linked to KB5124010. Complete the current WARDOGS update before following old Windows rollback advice. That patch does not establish the cause of every WD-L020 report; if the error persists, record the game Build and Windows version for support.

Before attempting a repair

Team17’s pinned support post lists WD-L004, WD-L006, WD-L007, WD-L010, WD-L014 and WD-L020 among launch/crash reports. A listed code does not by itself identify an Elytra fault. One suggested route is:

  1. Verify the WARDOGS files through Steam.
  2. Open that game’s installation folder and enter Elytra.
  3. Run the supplied setup and choose Repair.
  4. Restart the PC, then try one normal launch.

This procedure has not been independently reproduced here. If the folder or Repair option is absent, record the difference for support; do not substitute another game’s installer. No service name or command-line product identifier is prescribed.

If Windows security blocks a component, save the warning, publisher information and named file for support. Do not assume it is a false positive. A blank setup window is not evidence of a successful repair.

Stop if the whole PC blue-screens or restarts. Preserve the Windows stop code instead of repeating the launch.

KICKED: No Valid Heartbeat Within Window

The message “No Valid Heartbeat Within Window” comes from Elytra, not a ban. The server expects a regular heartbeat check-in from the anti-cheat on your PC; if one does not arrive in time, it ends the session. It is not only a Linux problem — Windows players report it too.

On Windows (Team17 Support, 19 September 2026): the posted fix makes Windows re-check the anti-cheat installer’s digital signature:

  1. Open the WARDOGS install folder (Steam → right-click WARDOGS → Manage → Browse local files), then open the Elytra subfolder.
  2. Right-click Elytra-Setup.exe, choose Properties → Digital Signatures.
  3. Select the signature, click Details → View Certificate, then open the Certification Path tab.
  4. Wait until the status reads “This certificate is OK”, close the dialogs and relaunch the game.

We have not reproduced this in a running client; treat it as Team17’s posted step, not a guaranteed fix. A community report also traced the kick to the cFosSpeed network tool and fixed it by disabling its network binding — that is not an official remedy.

On Linux / Steam Deck: Team17 confirmed on 20 September 2026 that WARDOGS is not supported on Linux and offered no recommendation there. Community reports trace the same kick under Proton to Elytra relying on a Windows kernel-level feature that does not exist on Linux. There is currently no confirmed fix beyond a supported Windows configuration.

What not to change blindly

Do not disable antivirus, Secure Boot or memory protection; download a replacement driver from an unrelated site; delete shared anti-cheat directories; or install a modified game executable. A forum report that a change helped one person is not a validated recommendation for your PC.

An explicit account restriction needs the game’s official support or appeal route. Reinstalling local files cannot appeal a ban.

Recovery checklist and support report

Check these separately: the original error disappeared, the game reached its menu, and a match could be joined. A menu alone does not establish server access.

For support, include client name, visible Build, Windows version, complete error, timestamp and the result of file verification. Remove account identifiers, tokens and personal paths from public logs. If you arrived from an old EAC guide, do not treat it as current Elytra documentation.
