Check which situation drops frames

This guide covers the Windows PC release through Steam. The launch build and the First Stability Update (version 40420, 8 October 2026) were reviewed on 27 October 2026. We have not measured frame rates in a running client.

Symptom What to check first
Stutter when moving or rotating the camera Update to the 8 October patch, then check graphics settings
Frame rate is fine early, falls off as a town and its traffic grow Late-game density; lower the settings that scale with a crowded map
Drops only after subscribing to a new mod Disable that mod and retest before changing hardware
Stutter that also happens in other 3D games GPU driver, background apps and thermal headroom

Update to the stability patch first

Transport Fever 3 launched with performance as the most common complaint in Steam reviews. Urban Games released the First Stability Update on 8 October 2026, and its own note says it improves “video memory management”, “smoother rendering when moving the camera” and “more consistent frame rates when displaying town and vehicle icons”.

  • Confirm you are on version 40420 or later before tuning anything else.
  • That update shipped for Steam on Windows, macOS and Linux first; GOG and Epic followed, and PlayStation 5 / Xbox Series X|S updates are still planned. If you are on console, the PC patch notes do not yet apply to your build.
  • A second stability and performance update followed in late October 2026, with further performance-focused work planned. Check the official news before spending time on manual tuning.
  • Nvidia users: the developer has confirmed a conflict with the 621.01 GeForce driver released on 21 October 2026. See our Nvidia driver guide before reinstalling anything.

Video memory and graphics settings

We have not tested which single setting helps most, so change one at a time and retest.

  • Lower the settings that scale with a busy scene first: shadow quality, view distance and anti-aliasing.
  • If the game reports high video-memory use, drop texture quality or the internal resolution rather than turning everything down at once.
  • A late-game map with many vehicles and towns is heavier than the early game, so a setting that was fine at the start can become the bottleneck later.

Mods and late-game density

  • Disable recently subscribed mods and start a fresh save to see whether the stutter follows the mod. The developer lists the Mod Hub as an area it is actively investigating.
  • Bigger maps and more simultaneous vehicles raise CPU and GPU load; if a save has grown over hours, try a smaller or less built-up region to separate game density from a hardware fault.

Drivers and background apps

  • Update the GPU driver with a clean installation (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel). Avoid GPU or CPU overclocking while troubleshooting.
  • Disable overlays you do not need — Discord, NVIDIA, AMD and RivaTuner can each hook the renderer.
  • Close the browser and other heavy apps so the game is not swapping to disk while you test.
