Check where it crashes

This guide covers the Windows PC release through Steam. The launch build and the First Stability Update (version 40420, 8 October 2026) were reviewed on 27 October 2026. We have not reproduced a crash in a running client.

Symptom What to check first
Crashes immediately or never opens Update the game, then verify files and the GPU driver
Crashes while a large save loads Mods, then game-file verification
Crashes mid-game after hours of play Update, then background apps and driver stability
Crashes only after a new mod Disable that mod and retest

Update to the stability patch first

Transport Fever 3 launched with crashes among the most common Steam complaints. Urban Games’ First Stability Update (8 October 2026) says it “should improve a good number of stability and performance issues”, and the developer also states this update does not fix every issue. Confirm you are on version 40420 or later before changing anything else.

  • The patch reached Steam on Windows, macOS and Linux first; GOG and Epic followed, and console updates are still planned.
  • If you are already on the latest build and still crash, the remaining steps below are safe to try.
  • Nvidia users: the developer has confirmed a conflict with the 621.01 GeForce driver released on 21 October 2026 — roll the driver back rather than reinstalling the game. See our Nvidia driver guide.
  • If the game never opens at all, that is a launch problem rather than a mid-game crash — follow the launch troubleshooting guide.

Verify files and update drivers

  • On Steam: right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
  • Update the GPU driver with a clean installation. Avoid GPU or CPU overclocking while you troubleshoot.
  • If the crash happens in other games too, the cause is more likely a driver or system issue than the game.

Mods

  • Disable recently subscribed or updated mods and load a fresh save. The developer lists the Mod Hub as an area under active investigation, so a mod or the mod browser can be the trigger.
  • If removing a mod breaks a save, re-enable it and report the crash with the mod list rather than repeatedly reloading.

What not to change blindly

Do not edit the game’s files, delete saves, or run third-party “fix” tools to chase a crash. A crash at launch is more often a patch, driver or mod issue than a corrupt installation, and the developer is still shipping stability updates — recheck the linked notes before assuming your copy is broken.

Report usefully

Capture the game version, where the crash happens (launch, load, or mid-game), OS, CPU/GPU/RAM, driver version, and any mods. Redact account details. Use the Steam discussions for the game and the official support channel.
