Separate a PC problem from a broken window

This guide covers the Windows, macOS and Linux PC releases. The launch build and both stability updates (First Stability Update v40420 on 8 October 2026, and a second stability update in late October 2026) were reviewed on 28 October 2026. We have not reproduced a launch failure in a running client.

Symptom What to check first
Nothing happens when you press Play AVX2 CPU support, then store client and file verification
A window opens but stays black Recover the window (Alt+Enter, display switching)
Freezes at startup Graphics driver, overlay software, dedicated GPU
Crashes during launch Mods and the dedicated crash guide

Check the AVX2 requirement first

Transport Fever 3 requires a 64-bit processor with AVX2 support. Older chips without it cannot run the game at all, and no setting or reinstall changes that.

  • Compare your CPU with the official store-page requirements: minimum is an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X; every supported processor must support AVX2.
  • On Steam, open Help → System Information and read the processor features line — look for AVX2 specifically, not just AVX. Our system requirements guide lists the full minimum and recommended hardware.

Find a hidden or black window

If the game is running in the taskbar but the window is invisible or black, it is usually a display problem, not a broken install.

  • Press Alt+Enter to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode.
  • Select the game’s window and press Win+Shift+Left Arrow or Win+Shift+Right Arrow to move it between monitors.
  • Check that the resolution selected in the game’s display settings is supported by your monitor; a fullscreen resolution can only be changed from the main menu.

Verify files and update the graphics driver

  • Steam: right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
  • GOG Galaxy: Manage Installation → Verify / Repair. Epic: the game’s three-dot menu → Verify.
  • Update the GPU driver with a clean installation — or, if you use an Nvidia card updated to the 621.01 driver, roll back instead. Urban Games has confirmed a conflict with that driver; see our Nvidia driver guide.
  • On a laptop with two graphics devices, force the dedicated GPU for the game in Windows graphics settings.

Test an unmodded launch

Mods are one of the most common launch-failure causes, and the developer lists disabling them among the official first steps.

  • Temporarily disable all mods and close overlay or monitoring software (Discord, MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner).
  • If the game starts cleanly, re-enable mods in small groups to isolate the cause. See our mods guide for the Mod Hub steps.

Still stuck?

Record the exact error text, whether a window opens at all, your CPU model, GPU, driver version and store platform. Use the Steam discussions and the official support channel. A generic “Error 126” style message does not identify a single cause — the evidence you collect decides which of the checks above applies.
