AION 2 Best Settings for FPS: Stop Stuttering in Cities and the Abyss
The short answer
AION 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5 and drops frames where many players gather — cities, dungeons and Abyss battles, not open-field questing. Lower Mass Combat Quality, Shadow Quality, Global Illumination and Reflection Quality first, switch DLSS or FSR to Quality or Balanced, and keep Textures high only if your GPU has the VRAM.

Where the frame drops actually happen
This guide covers the AION 2 Global PC release on Unreal Engine 5. The official Steam requirements and independent settings guides were reviewed on 28 October 2026. We have not measured frame rates in a running client, so change one setting at a time and retest.
AION 2 is not uniformly heavy. Drops are reported in crowded cities, dungeons and large Abyss battles — scenes where many players and skills are on screen at once — not in open-field questing. That is why the first settings to lower are the ones that scale with crowd size.
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| FPS tanks in cities or the Abyss, fine in the field | Lower the crowd-scaling options (below) |
| Stutter everywhere, including other games | GPU driver, background apps, storage and thermal headroom |
| Hitching when moving between zones | Install on an SSD — the world streams as you move |
| Smoothness drops after a very long session | Restart the client |
The official requirements
These figures come from the official store/landing page, cross-checked against community guides.
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10/11 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| CPU | Ryzen 5 2600 / Core i5-10500 | Ryzen 7 3700X / Core i7-11700 |
| RAM | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB / RX 470 | RTX 2070 8 GB / RX 5700 XT |
| DirectX | 12 | 12 |
| Storage | 100 GB (SSD recommended) | 100 GB (SSD recommended) |
Note the official recommended GPU (RTX 2070) is still paired with a low 1080p preset — NC set conservative targets for an MMO where player count can explode in one spot. Do not expect “recommended” to mean “max every setting”.
Lower the crowd-scaling options first
Turn these down in this order before touching resolution or Texture Quality:
- Mass Combat Quality — the single biggest lever for big-crowd scenes.
- Shadow Quality — heavy in cities and dungeons.
- Global Illumination Quality — a large cost on mid-range GPUs.
- Reflection Quality — costly with little gameplay value.
- Player Particle Effect Display — set to Self and Party, or Self Only, to cut effects from strangers.
- Vegetation Quality / Volumetric Fog — easy FPS back in open-world zones.
Anything that scales with how many players and skills are on screen goes down first.
Texture Quality follows VRAM, not FPS
Texture Quality mostly consumes video memory, so dropping it should not be your first move. Around 8 GB of VRAM can usually keep Textures at High; 4 GB cards should use Normal or Low if stuttering appears. Lower Textures only when VRAM is actually maxed out.
Upscaling: DLSS / FSR
- Use an upscaler instead of lowering the raw resolution — it keeps more detail for the same FPS gain.
- Start with Quality, move to Balanced if drops remain in cities, and Performance near the minimum spec.
- Frame Generation is fine for PvE, but leave it off in Abyss PvP — it improves smoothness, not the responsiveness of a higher native frame rate.
- Enable NVIDIA Reflex (On or Boost) if available: lower latency with no FPS cost.
Storage, drivers and background apps
- Install on an SSD. AION 2 streams its world as you move; a mechanical drive shows up as hitching between zones. This is the cheapest meaningful upgrade.
- Update the GPU driver before a long session. New releases get most of their early fixes through drivers; a clean install rules out leftovers after an update.
- Close overlays you do not need — Discord, recording tools and GPU monitors each hook the renderer.
- If performance slowly degrades over a long session, restart the client rather than hunting for a settings fault.
What we have not confirmed
These are official requirements plus independent community settings guides, not measured frame times, and we have not tested them in a running client. Menu names can shift between client patches, so match by name rather than position. If a single option does not help, revert it before changing the next one.
