Helldivers 2 Failed to Join Lobby: PC and PS5 Checks
The short answer
Compare one solo mission, public Quickplay, a friend invitation and both hosting directions on the same client build. Record the exact message, time and platform. Solo play working while multiplayer fails narrows the symptom, but does not prove a cause, a universal fix or a live server outage.

Solo works but multiplayer fails: run four comparisons
This guide covers Steam on Windows and PS5 separately. The original official support sources were reviewed on September 14, 2026; we read the September 11 community review on September 15. We have not tested these steps in the game or confirmed current service availability.
| Test | Record the observable result |
|---|---|
| Launch one solo mission | Did the mission load and remain playable? On PC, use the PC crash guide if the game cannot boot or closes. On PS5, use the PS5 branch below only when the game opens and the failure occurs while joining; a console startup crash is outside this guide. |
| Search public Quickplay once | Record whether it finds a squad, times out or shows exact text such as Failed to join game lobby or Establishing up-link. |
| Accept one fresh friend invitation | Record who sent it, each platform and whether the invitation reached the ship. |
| Test both hosting directions | Player A hosts once, then Player B hosts once; record each result without changing several settings between attempts. |
Run the comparisons on the same updated client build when possible. Write down the displayed version, exact message, time and time zone, and each player’s platform. These are observable facts for support, not proof of causality. A solo mission succeeding while multiplayer fails separates the symptom from a general startup failure, but it does not identify the network component or prove a widespread outage.
Start with an updated, fresh session
Ask everyone in the test group to finish game updates, close the game and reopen it. On Steam, finish pending downloads; on PS5, highlight the game and use Options → Check for Update. Compare the displayed game versions when available.
Have the host reach their ship, confirm a free squad slot and send a new invitation through the in-game social menu. An invitation-only session needs an invitation. Use a known friend for the comparison, then reverse who hosts once and record both results.
For PC-to-PS5 play, check that crossplay is enabled on both sides. Turning it off prevents that particular comparison from testing cross-platform joining. On PS5, also check the online-play subscription requirement shown on the official game page.
Quickplay fails, but friends can still join
A working friend session shows that at least one joining path works. It does not prove every matchmaking service is healthy.
Try one fresh Quickplay search after reopening the game and compare it with the friend invitation. If you are hosting for strangers, check that your lobby access permits public joining. Restore your preferred access setting after testing.
Keep a working friend session if that lets you play. Check official announcements for an incident or maintenance notice matching your platform and time. This page does not monitor live outages, and an old discussion with “servers” in its title is not a current status report.
Only one friend’s lobby fails
Both players should inspect Social → Blocked Players for an accidental block. Arrowhead explains that blocked players cannot directly join sessions hosted by each other. Remove a block only if it was unintended; you do not need to undo deliberate safety choices.
If a different host works, keep the original failure details. That narrows the affected pairing but does not establish whether the cause is an account, session or network problem.
Every lobby fails: Steam PC
- Restart Steam and check that it is online. Note whether other online services also fail.
- If failure began after an interrupted game update, use Library → HELLDIVERS 2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files, then retry a fresh invitation.
- If practical, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection to the same router. Record the result and restore your normal connection afterward.
- If multiple services fail, investigate the local connection with your internet provider or network administrator. A successful browser page alone does not verify game connectivity.
Keep firewall, antivirus and anti-cheat protection enabled. Do not delete settings, change DNS or reinstall Windows merely because joining failed.
Every lobby fails: PS5
Check PlayStation service status at the time of your problem. Then open Settings → Network → Connection Status → Test Internet Connection and record any failed stage or PS5 error code. This path comes from PlayStation support; a HELLDIVERS lobby error is not automatically that support page’s CE-109506-1 code.
Restart the console and retry. For a wired comparison, use Settings → Network → Settings → Set Up Internet Connection → Set Up Wired LAN → Connect, following PlayStation’s instructions. Passing the console test does not guarantee a specific game lobby will work. Do not reset the console or delete saved data for this diagnostic.
Still blocked? Send a comparison, not just the error
The research behind this page included two historical August threads with different symptoms and no universal repair. We also read a September 11 Steam review in full: one reviewer said multiplayer no longer worked while solo play did. The review did not provide an error, hardware, build or attempted steps, and it was one of ten recent negative reviews in this sample. It confirms the reported symptom, not its cause or current widespread impact.
Send Arrowhead support your platform, game version, time/time zone, exact message, Quickplay versus friend results, host reversal, crossplay setting and network-test outcome. Include PS5 codes or PC logs only when relevant, and review attachments for personal information. The official known-issues list does not cover every connection failure.
